A Secret Page for the Invited

three grams of elsewhere

Ever since civil war fractured the United States into four ideologically pure nations fifty years ago, Harmony “Bibi” Cain has isolated himself: from society, from technology, from family. A powerful empath who’s weary from the constant intrusion of others’ emotions, he’s finally shuttered his detective agency hoping for the hollow peace of further isolation.

Yeah, well.

When four impossible-seeming murders shake North America, Bibi is drawn into an investigation he wants nothing to do with. The victims were killed by motes—unstoppable drones only an empath can control—and decades ago, Bibi was part of the program that created them: the program that weaponized empathy.

But, afflicted with self-doubt and buffeted by others’ choices, Bibi begins to suspect the investigation isn’t at all what it seems. Now, Bibi will need to resolve a lifelong struggle with his own extraordinary empathy before he can discover whether these murders are really his to solve—or whether Bibi himself is the key to preventing war.
